My Students

The library is a great way for my students to experience many different adventures. They are able to use their imaginations to travel to far away places and meet many new and interesting characters. The students in this class come from a variety of backgrounds. The students enjoy listening to many different stories. They also enjoy hearing about the adventures of their favorite literary characters. The school is a large urban public school where most of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The Head Start program services students from low income families.

My Project

Children love listening to stories read aloud. There are many benefits to listening to stories read aloud. Young learners will be exposed to fluency, left to right directionality, and listening comprehension. One way for students to experience stories being read aloud in an independent situation is through the use of a listening center.

Hearing a book being read aloud on tape allows students to see how words on the page come alive in a fluid, expressive way.

Listening library books enrich a child's multi-sensory experiences with books and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give an important introduction to listening, which is a skill that one must master in order to read.

Many audio books have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. They oftentimes demonstrate the deep pleasure that books can provide to children of all levels, which serves as a stepping stone to every other kind of reading adventure.
