This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you listened to a great story be read aloud? My students need to hear great literature read aloud to them every day by a variety of voices: their teachers, their family members, and even famous authors and actors.

Our students attend school in the middle of a major downtown area.

They come from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. They face many challenges ranging from bringing basic school supplies to the classroom to meeting academic expectations. Our school instills a love of learning in each student and encourages each and every student to aim for higher learning. Many of our students will be the first member of their family to attend college.

My Project

My students need a CD player, 8 Station Junction Box, and headphones to listen to quality literature during our reading block for enjoyment and to hear strong fluency models. Listening to quality literature builds reading enjoyment and provides strong models of fluent reading. Our classroom has books on CD and multiple copies of these books but no way to listen to them and enjoy them together. These materials will allow up to 8 students to listen to stories at once, so that all children have a chance each and every day to hear and enjoy quality literature. Listening will also help them as they begin to monitor their own reading. They will model their reading style after the fluent readers they hear on the CDs.

This project will help support growing readers who are eager to listen to great books!

Children who grow up surrounded by books are destined to be lifelong readers who use their love of reading to support their other interests in life.
