Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it like to be read to as a child? There is simply nothing like it. As a child we love this activity because we can relax and really get involved in the story, as a teacher I know that this is a crucial component in the reading process.

My fifth grade students come from a low income area where there is an extremely high Spanish speaking population.

For most of my students English is their second language and they have a very difficult time with reading. They lack the vocabulary and language shills they need in order to be a successful reader. For the many of my students, the only time they hear English is at school because their parents only speak Spanish.

My Project

My co-teacher and I have recently launched The Daily 5 in our classroom. The Daily 5 is a literacy based system that develops individual reading skills. Our students absolutely love The Daily 5 and request it throughout the day. The program is allowing them to take ownership in their learning which is something that every teacher wants for their students. Not only to the students enjoy it, but their reading is improving as we'll. unfortunately we do not have one component of The Daily 5 which is a listening center. While there are listening centers in the school, they are old read alouds which do not match up to with our students reading level and do not hold their interest. This listening center contains books that are on our students levels and more importantly our students will be interested in them. I'm sure everyone remembers being forced to read books that held no interest to them. You are not engaged in the story and therefore will not improve your reading skills.

By having this listening center in my classroom my students will be able to work on their fluency as well as their listening comprehension.

They will learn new vocabulary and unfamiliar words which is extremely important because of their lack of vocabulary. This center will not only improve these extremely important skills but will also hold our students attention, allowing them to enjoy reading. As teachers this is our ultimate goal to have students want to read, not read because they have to.
