My Students

Many students suffer from disabilities that make reading nearly impossible. They are too old to read beginner books and find them even remotely interesting.

My students attend a Title I, inner-city school.

They are enthusiastic learners but often lack the basic skills and exposure necessary for high level reading experiences. Many of the students have disabilities that make learning very frustrating and alienating. They rarely experience the pride and confidence associated with growth in knowledge.

My Project

A listening center will greatly aid students who are reading at below grade level by letting them listen to books on CD. There is ample research that shows that children learn just as much by hearing books read to them as they do when reading them for themselves. Unfortunately, there are not enough teachers/adults to constantly read for these students, and that is where the listening center comes in. They can sit down and listen to a story while they are completing their reading assignments and then check in with the teacher to go over their work.

This project is crucial for allowing students who are behind in reading to catch up.

They will spend time improving their reading mechanics as well, but if they cannot access the grade level work, they will continue to fall behind. We all know how crucial reading is for any profession in this world. This project could help to put those left behind back on a path to success. Thank you.
