Listening Center

My students need a listening center where they will be able to listen to books on tape or CD. Many of my students are English Learners who will benefit from listening to books while expanding their vocabulary.

Help Ms. LeGrand

I teach Special education in a Title I middle school where all of my students are facing challenges to their disabilities and being an English Learner. My students are in 7th and 8th grade working below their grade level. They work and enjoy reading.

My students are facing two huge obstacles: their disabilities and being second language learners. Very often, reading is a bog issue for them, impairing them to be successful at school. My students could benefit from a listening center which will increase their reading fluency, their vocabulary and increase their self esteem. Due to some cuts, our fund has been cut and unfortunately, a listening center is not a priority.

I will need a listening center where my lower students could come practice on daily basis their reading by listening and following the reading. It will increase their comprehension. Many times, students don't feel comfortable practicing in front of others. The listening center will provide a quiet place to improve listening, reading fluency, vocabulary without being judged by their classmates.

This is often the last chance for my students to practice their reading skills. After middle school, they will feel too embarrassed to practice reading and many of them will give up. I wish to give them basic reading skills that will help them to work and be independent in the outside world. They NEED to learn reading. They cannot and will not be able to survive in the real world without reading.
