My Students

My students are two grade levels below in their reading. They need to hear what fluent reading sounds like since many of their parents don't or can't read to them. Right now I'm lacking a listening center and books with a CD so that they can hear fluent reading.

My students come from an area that has a high rate of poverty, the average income is around $10,000.

Most of my students get no additional help at home so school and my classroom is where most if not all their learning happens. My reading students are 1.5 to 2 years below grade level. They struggle in many areas, but fluency is what keeps them from moving to the next level. My students need to hear more fluent readers and be able to practice reading fluently as well.

My Project

My students work at work stations while I work with a small group on reading. One of the centers that would help my students the most is the listening center. Students would rotate to the center so each day all students will be able to listen to fluent readers. Students would be able to pick the story they want to listen to so they themselves can become fluent in reading the book. This fluency will help them increase their reading level.

The students in my reading groups are 1.5 to 2 years below grade level.

Fluency is an area that causes them not to move to the next level. A listening center will help them increase their fluency while listening to a fluent reader. My goal is to increase their reading level by at least 1.5 years by May. My students need these materials to help ensure that they can reach at goal.
