My Students

"If you can READ this THANK a teacher." Reading is the most fundamental part of Kindergarten, and sadly for my students we lack the resources to create lifelong readers and writers. In Kindergarten our whole day is centered around Reading and Writing and we love to have fun while practicing!

I teach at low income, inner-city urban school made up of 99% of students who receive free lunches.

These students come to school everyday excited to learn and have fun! Because of the circumstances at home, it is a very daunting task to teach these students the fundamentals of reading because the don't have the simplest tool that everyone needs to read which is BOOKS!

My Project

Fluency is one of the most IMPORTANT tools to becoming a successful reader! By providing my students with a listening center it allows them to listen to how books should be read! Most of my students do not have the opportunity to hear books at home so as a teacher it is my job to allow them to listen to good readers through books on CD's! This listening center will be used DAILY during our Literacy block to allow children to "Listen to Reading" during our Daily 5 time. Right now, I am the only tool students have to listen to reading and it is CRUCIAL that they HEAR as MANY different versions of reading as possible!

There are not enough words to express how this listening center will changes these children's lives!

It is a tool to help these students to become CONFIDENT fluent readers who WANT to read! It will give them to confidence to believe they CAN READ! This will be just the begging to make a difference in the lives of these children, who hopefully will continue on to become LIFELONG readers!! :)
