My Students

The children in my pre-kindergarten classroom love choice time! This is where the magic of learning happens! During this time they especially love listening to stories. Including an easy to use CD player in a listening center would make this activity more accessible to my students.

My pre-kindergarten class includes 18 students from diverse backgrounds.

We are a growing school, and currently have grades pre-kindergarten to 3rd grade. Our school is a community of learners, where both students and teachers who strive to do their very best on a daily basis!

My Project

I would like to add a listening center to our choice time activities. In this center, my students would be able independently access and use a simple CD player to listen to some of their favorite fairy tales. We have a lovely cozy corner with pillows and cushions where the students could sit and listen to their story. This will give them the independence to read a book on their own. While listening to the book, my students will be prompted to pay attention to cues from for the CD so that they know when to turn the pages. It will also give them an opportunity to look at the illustrations in the story to see if it matches the words they are hearing. They can also begin pointing to the words they hear, gaining a one to one correspondence while listening to the words of the story. I am excited to see the smiles on their faces, as they practice this skill and begin to recognize familiar words!

I would love to continue to foster a love for reading in my classroom.

The listening center will allow children to feel independent while "reading" a story on their own. This center will help my students with their emergent literacy skills, which certainly includes refining their listening skills!
