My Students

Each day in our classroom the students are engaged in groups to complete various literacy centers that support guided reading instruction. This allows the students to complete meaningful literacy tasks together while the teacher works with a small group to focus on specific needs.

My students are a fun loving bunch who come from all different backgrounds.

Some of them come from a military background in which they have moved around from school to school or have parents who have deployed. Some of them are from lower income families in which parents have to work multiple jobs to provide for their family. All of them enjoying learning and love working together to learn new things and practice what they have learned.

My Project

Students vary in their literacy needs and ability levels, and, therefore, they need multiple opportunities to read, write, participate in meaningful experiences, and multiple opportunities to collaborate with each other so they can develop their ability to read and comprehend. In our classroom, we structure our language arts block according to the Daily 5 in which students will rotate through literacy centers in which they will Read to Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Read to Someone. My students need a listening center, including a table, supply caddies, headphones, and junction box, for literacy stations to listen to fluent reading as they think about a text being read.

Children take great pleasure in listening to stories.

Having a listening center in which the students can listen to books on tape/CD will allow students to hear fluent reading and to see how the words on the page can come alive in an expressive way. It also helps students to focus on the sounds words make without interruptions. They are also introduced to new vocabulary words. Being able to listen in a group gives students the opportunity to participate in group discussions.
