1 Listening Center = Years of Engaged Little Learners!!
My students need a listening center. Many of the students are ELLs and/or have special learning needs. This will help everyone in the class increase comprehension and fluency with a love of reading.
Our school is located in upper Manhattan. The school began in 1993 by a group of Washington Heights and Inwood teachers who wanted to create a progressive option in the neighborhood. Our school is now a recognized model for progressive education.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and learning needs.
Many of the students are ELLs and many others need special learning accommodations to help with their learning style and needs. Our progressive approach means that we tailor our teaching to the individual needs of our students, the classroom, and the school. Students learn through a hands-on, project based approach. You may find our classroom sitting amongst the fallen leaves at a nearby park, sketching and analyzing the changes in the trees; or celebrating a "book launch" with an upper grade classroom after each student finished writing their first book series.
The students come from a variety of backgrounds and home lives, some much more difficult than others. However, they all find a strong loving community at Muscota.
My Project
Every day we have one period for "Literacy Rotations", during this time, groups of six sit in different parts of the room based on reading goals and student needs. This allows me to meet with a small group of six for guided reading and to work individually with the students. My goal is to engage each of the other groups in exciting and educational work while I meet with one group.
Through this project, I am requesting for a listening center which includes such items as read-along books, headphones, and a cd-player.
These items would assist in increasing comprehension and fluency skills among all students and help me to meet the needs of my ELLs and the special needs of my learners. The listening center will be a station during Literacy Rotations where a group of six can engage with a book on their own and record their thoughts to aid in comprehension.
