This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fall into reading! I am currently teaching in a 1st grade ICT class. There are general education students and special education students together. The school is located in a low income community, and the children have many obstacles to overcome.

One of the obstacles my students are faced with is reading.

More than half of my class can be described as either non-readers or emergent readers. They have a very limited sight word vocabulary and have difficulty decoding text. Some also have limited letter/sound recognition.

My Project

The resources that I need are a radio, a headphone jack, and books on tape/ CD for my listening center. Having the books on tape/CD will help increase my students' enthusiasm for books. The books on tape/CD will allow the students to follow along as the text is being narrated, increase their word base, and allow them to be more independent.

Your help will ensure that my students will be exposed to literature and gain a love for books.

You will make it possible for my students to become independent readers, increase their word base, and gain fluency.
