My Students

Dr. Seuss said it best, "the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go." Help me fill my classroom with books that students love.

I teach Kindergarten in an urban public school in northern Chicago.

The neighborhood my school serves is an immigrant community. Our student body of 730 Preschool through eighth graders represents nearly 40 different world languages. Of my 26 students, 19 are English language learners. Indeed, my classroom is diverse, and I am constantly looking for resources to meet the myriad needs of my students. The majority of Kindergarten students are early emergent readers. These aspiring readers are just beginning to grasp the basic concepts of reading print. As part of their development, my students participate in literacy centers for a portion of the day. These independent learning centers are designed to develop the basic concepts of literacy. My students rotate through seven different literacy centers, including a listening center. However, our listening center desperately needs support. We need a new CD player and several sets of books to complete the center.

My Project

My students need books to hold their attention whilst listening. I am asking for 22 different book titles in sets of three, including The Cow That Laid an Egg, Funny Farm and Owl Moon. I am also asking for a durable CD player from Lakeshore Learning, and six bins for storage. A listening center is an independent learning activity in which students listen to audiobooks and follow along with the text. A typical listening center accommodates roughly four students. In order for the center to be successful, each student should have their own set of headphones and their own book to follow along. My students almost have the ideal listening center. I have inherited audio files and headphones; however, we are missing a very important piece to this puzzle… the books! Last year my class was only able to listen to the audio. For five and six year olds, this is simply not engaging enough and students lose focus rather quickly. Substantial research shows that audiobooks, used in conjunction with text, are great partners for developing student achievement.

As students listen and follow along to the narration, they develop both listening and reading skills.

The pictures and sounds are also engaging, which appeals to all emergent readers, including English language learners and children with other special learning needs. A listening center can help break down language barriers and promote listing skills among English language learners. This project will change all my students' lives for the better.
