This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my 4th grade classroom not only face challenges due to living in a low-income/high-poverty school district, but they are also confronted with unique challenges as English Language Learners. Despite these obstacles, my students inspire me each day with their creativity, passion, excitement and their drive to grow and succeed.

While there are many barriers that threaten to hold them back, my students work hard to overcome the challenges they face.

The typical student in my class reads at a second grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. As a bilingual teacher, I am expected to deliver excellent instruction to my students in reading, writing, math, science and social studies, while also including instruction in Spanish. In addition, I must provide the necessary differentiation required to meet the students' special needs and varying levels within my classroom. It is a challenge that my students and I have gladly accepted - however there are many resources still needed to help us move forward.

My Project

All of my students come from households in which English is not the primary language spoken. Their time at school is crucial because it is some of the only time that they interact with the English language and have the chance to acquire essential literacy skills. All of my students are below-grade-level for the fourth grade, with some reading at a first-grade level or below. My students are motivated, but they need the resources in our classroom to keep them engaged and focused on success.

Having a listening center will allow my students to develop their literacy skills and make reading an integral part of their lives.

The listening center will give my students the chance to be exposed to new texts that they will be able to immerse themselves in, thereby improving their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Though it is difficult to meet the needs of each student because of limited time and resources, this project would provide my students with the chance to make strides in boosting their literacy skills, which could bring many of them up to grade level.
