My Students

Whatever happened to reading for fun? I loved the listening center when I was young. It was the most popular center in class. In today's schools, most reading follows with an assignment or assessment. I'd like my 7-year-olds to experience untethered joy while reading.

My students are bright 7-year-olds.

They are very typical and run the gamut from naughty to nice (mostly nice!). As accomplished readers, sometimes they are expected to master even more difficult material. But I'd like to give them a break on our Friday Center day. I'd like them to be able to sit and have someone read to them--just for the joy of reading and listening. And the readers of store-bought books I'm sure are more entertaining than the familiarity of my daily voice.

My Project

I've requested the following resources: Math Literature books (at a high level) to tie literature into mathematics; Anansi stories that tie into our current literature program; the Frog Prince story to keep alive fairy tales; and headphones that can plug into our cd player (the current headphones have a large attachment, and the cd player has small receptacles). I actually wish there were more choices...at a later time I would like to add to the classroom collection of reading cds and books.

My dream is to help all my students become life-long readers and learners.

Part of this is to help them enjoy it so that they will want to continue learning throughout their lives. Unfortunately today, with so much testing and assessment-based instruction, I'm afraid that some students might run from learning once they graduate. Let's turn that tide, now!
