My Students

I teach a group of sixth through eighth grade students in a Philadelphia public school in a high poverty area. My students are full of energy. They enjoy going outside and playing games. They love funny stories, comics, sports stories and biographies. My students can be competitive but are also compassionate and support each other.

I teach Life Skills Support Special Education.

The students in my class have an intellectual disability but more important they have unique personalities and strengths. They come to school ready to learn and try their best.

In our classroom, we learn English Language Arts and math. We also learn "Life Skills." We learn to communicate and cook. We learn social skills and talk about vocations and practice these pre-job skills. These students are learning the skills that will help them succeed outside the classroom.

My Project

My students participate in reading and math programs on the computer. The programs are designed to give instruction on each student's individual level. The screen shows images but the program also provides audio. Students need to hear the instruction and the audio clues in order to answer the questions.

While some students are completing online lessons, other students are working in small groups.

Often there are three or four different groups working at the same time. Although they are all working on the same subject, they are all working on different skills. Students who are working on the computer-based program, are easily distracted by other students in the room. Headphones will allow them to both hear the program and block out other noises in the classroom
