This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an amazing school in Queens, New York. Our students are inquisitive, creative, and adorable children from all over the globe. Most students are children who speak English as a second language. Many of them are living well below the poverty level with parents working two or more jobs to make ends meet. We also have a large special-needs community. Our children may struggle but they never give up!

Our students love the stories that we read aloud to them every day.

They love to use their imaginations and create characters that take them to faraway places. For some of them, their imagination is the only place that they go that offers them a break from a life of challenges.

My Project

My students love to hear the stories that we read to them each day, but they get much more out of reading and listening at the same time! We need headphones for each child to be able to listen to our book programs on a computer, and a CD player to play audio versions of their favorite books. That way they can listen while they read the book. With headphones and a CD player, my struggling readers will have the opportunity to SEE and HEAR the words at the same time. Having access to the CD player will give them the chance to listen to their favorite stories over and over again.

Repeated exposure to the same reading content gives a child a sense of familiarity with the story and great confidence as they find the words easier to read each time.

A confident reader will read much more often and having headphones will allow each child privacy as he reads. This will allow them the independence that makes for a successful learner.
