Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 3rd grade students are a diverse bunch from all over the world. Their countries of origin include Mexico, Guatemala, Sudan, Afghanistan, India, Korea, Vietnam, and Bosnia. They live in poverty and are learning English as quickly as they can. They will take the Illinois State standardized test for the first time this year in Reading, Writing, and Math. This is a traumatic experience for most of them! Many of my students are reading below grade level. This is a result of poverty, recent immigration to the U.S., learning English as a second language, and overcrowded classrooms in a burdened urban school district.

To help my students improve their fluency (smooth, error-free reading), reading expression, and reading comprehension, I want to provide the opportunity for them to listen to stories multiple times while reading along. Listening to a story aids understanding, because children have a listening vocabulary 2 or 3 grade levels higher than their reading level. Hearing a story makes it easier to understand. Hearing while reading along will increase decoding skills, improve vocabulary, and teach children to read with expression.

To minimize distraction to other students, I need personal CD players with headphones. This will eliminate the need for listening students to huddle around our CD player, straining to hear the story as we keep the volume low so other children can work. Students with headphones will be able to sit anywhere without disturbing children working on other activities.

Sadly, my district uses the state test results to determine whether a child passes third grade! Won't you help me provide my students extra opportunities to improve their skills and beat the test? We need your help to overcome the barriers already stacked against my young children.
