My Students

Computers are great, but not when 20 people are working on skills programs with sound all at the same time! Headphones will allow students to concentrate on their own learning.

I have the best third graders in the world!

They are kind, loving, warm, and excited to learn. They also come from extremely economically disadvantaged homes. Many students come from single family homes, and several live in the local shelter. Many of these students care for younger siblings while their parents work or sleep because they work the night shift. They all qualify for free breakfast and lunch everyday. But, despite their hardships, they come to school excited to learn every day. School is a safe haven for many of my students. Violence, shootings, and death are the norm for many. School is the one place they can expect consistency and routine.

My Project

Headphones are needed for my students to work on the computers without disturbing everyone around them. We have been working on a fantastic program that has been credited with helping students gain 1 to 2 years of reading skills in just a few months. The program is exciting, engaging, and educational. The problem is we do not have enough headphones for the students to work on the programs all at the same time in the computer lab or laptops. We also do not have the time to let students work in shifts. Headphones (15 pairs) will enable students to work as a class to progress through the program while being time efficient.

Urban children come to school academically behind their suburban counterparts.

We need to be creative, engaging, and proactive in finding ways for all our students to succeed. We have found a wonderful computer program that is all of the above. Having headphones for all our students will give them the opportunity to make up for lost time and become the successful students we know they are!
