This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being in Kindergarten and listening to stories and songs on the big, old record player? Well unfortunately my students still have to listen to records. I would like a listening center so my class could listen to and read along with storybooks on CD.

My class is a Kinder/First combo made up of eager, happy students.

They are the children of working class, immigrant parents and many are second language learners. Our school is an oasis in a busy, tough neighborhood. Unfortunately. most of the kids have not had any exposure to storybooks or learning songs, and their language development is lacking.

My Project

With a listening center, my students will be able to sit and read along with age appropriate storybooks. The children will hear the words pronounced correctly, while seeing them in print at the same time. This will aid in their reading development as well as helping to develop their spoken language. Additionally, they can listen to songs and chants specifically targeted to their English learner level and learn basic concepts in a fun, involving manner. The kids can work independently, or in small groups, and the teacher will be able to give individualized attention to students who need more help.

We are educating all of our students to succeed in the 21st Century.

Too often, children in urban schools in large public school systems don't have the same resources as their suburban counterparts. My students deserve the same opportunities and same access to up to date technology as all other children. This listening center won't completely level the playing field, but it will certainly help. Anything that improves reading and spoken English will help my children to succeed.
