My Students
I teach fourth and fifth grade superstars in a Title 1 school in New York City. My students are eager to learn, energetic and have a positive outlook on life and learning. I teach students with disabilities that range from learning to behavioral in a self contained setting. In spite of their many deficits they always have a positive attitude about getting to work and being stars. My students are hands on and auditory and visual learners that need resources readily available to meet them where they academically need.
My Project
Throughout the year my students are constantly asking other teachers if they can borrow headphones. This interrupts my teaching as well as the other teacher who they are requesting headphones from. If we had a set of headphones of our own, as well as a complete listening center, my third and fourth-grade students could get through a lesson without distractions.
My students excel when a text is being read to them.
Although I plan on reading many books to my students on a daily basis, it is important that they hear books read to them by different voices. This increases their listening skills. Having different vocabulary activities on CD will also make learning fun.
Hearing a book on tape is just as important as picking up a book and reading the words aloud to yourself. My students need to learn to listen for specific details that aide with the comprehension of the text. An active listening center is an important part of a classroom community. Students can not only listen to the books but they can have meaningful conversations about the books afterward.
