Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade teacher in a PreK-5 school in New York City and I am writing this proposal for a listening center and several books on tape for our classroom. I would like to use the Listening Center and the books on tape as scaffolding in my Balanced Literacy Program to support students in their journey to be successful readers. These materials would not only benefit my current students but also those in future classes. As part of our daily 90 minute literacy block, the students work in literacy centers. Literacy center time allows students to refine their knowledge of what is being taught. The students are put into small groups and rotate around the different centers throughout a week's time. Some students work independently in meaningful learning centers while I work on guided reading with individual and small groups of students. I would like to incorporate these listening activities into our literacy centers. I want my students to get focused practice in additional areas and I want them to be excited about building listening and comprehension skills as they read along at a guided reading level that instructs, supports and promotes fluency independently. Providing the students these additional opportunities to practice their listening skills will greatly benefit a positive outcome to our reading goals. The listening center will provide additional opportunities for students to practice the five most important prerequisites to reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development and comprehension which will also prepare them for their upcoming New York State Exams. I have requested the following materials: a student listening center which includes six sets of headphones, a CD player, jack with volume control and locking case, and seven different leveled books with cds for use with listening center. Titles include Ribsy, Sarah, Plain and Tall, Frindle, Junie B. Jones pack, Magic Tree House pack, Marley, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
