My Students

People often ask me why I commute so far away to teach when I could work in a much more affluent community closer to where I live. The simple answer is because I have never been a happier teacher than when I'm with my students.

They make me smile, laugh, sing and dance, and challenge me everyday.

There are 5 different primary languages in my homeroom this year, the entire district receives free breakfast and lunch due to high poverty levels and there's no where else I'd rather be.

My Project

In first grade, my students go though so many changes, and one of the most important things they learn is how to read. They are expected to make a great deal of gains over the course of the year when it comes to their level of reading. As their teacher, I work hard to find as many ways as possible to increase their literacy skills.

One of the best ways to increase a child's reading ability is to allow them to interact with high quality literature.

Many of my students do not have access to books in their homes, so it is my responsibility to provide them with all that I can. This is why I am requesting Books on CD and head phones so that we can create a listening center. Student reading ability is greatly influenced by all that they see and hear, and I want to give my students every opportunity to become great lifelong readers! Thank you for considering our project, it is greatly appreciated.
