This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My amazing students live in NY. We are a Title I school and my class is learning remotely this year. They are happy and excited to attend our Zoom class, and they love participating and interacting with each other. Although we are staying safe from the virus, we are facing a whole new set of challenges. The biggest challenge my students face in the virtual classroom is not having a quiet learning space. Most of my students do not have their own bedroom or a separate space in their home. They are often attending school in the same room where siblings are in remote class, or adults are conversing, cooking, and living their lives. I have had students take tests in the bathroom because it is the only unoccupied space in their home. Even if they have a quiet space, there are often sirens and other city noises to distract. Headphones with microphones will limit distractions and increase student learning and engagement.

My Project

First grade is hard! It is a big jump from kindergarten and the skills require focus and practice. Discussion is one of the most important and challenging skills first graders learn. Learning to listen to classmates, to consider whether they agree or disagree with what was said, and then to explain their thinking is not easy. Now, students are home with many new distractions, and active listening has become more challenging. Headphones with microphones will block many distracting background noises while allowing students to hear their classmates' voices more clearly. Students will be able to respond to each other more easily so conversations can become more fluid and meaningful.
