My Students

Our students at NY Harbor School are unique and amazing. At our school they have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, taking the regular coursework and regents, while also participating in a maritime CTE program to earn accreditations, professional certificates, licenses and other trade certified skills. This means that balance a lot on top of their lives outside of school. Many students spend hours before and after school working or volunteering. They are inspiring leaders that want to change the world!

My Project

The English department at my school was fortunate enough to purchase a class set of laptops at the end of last year. This was a huge need in our department, and we are committed to keeping our technology in excellent condition to ensure longevity. As a department, we all agreed that it was important to have headphones to accompany the computers to take full advantage of the laptops as learning, educational tools.

For example, one of the units I taught at the end of last school year was about human rights.

Students were asked to take a position on an issue they cared about and comprise their own list of resources modeled after our collaborative research in class. In class, I used articles, Ted Talks, podcasts, radio features, documentaries, and infographics. However, this became challenging for students to replicate because they couldn't all complete their individual research at the same time! Imagine 30+ Ted Talks playing at the same time. It was a nightmare! Luckily, the generous ESL teacher let us borrow her headphones and students had huge success with their projects!

Needless to say, as a department, we understood getting a class set of headphones to accompany our laptops was imperative. We tried to order them at the end of the year through funding available from our school. Unfortunately, it fell under the classification of "utilities" and did not meet the budget requirements. So, now we are hoping to try another route. We would love any donation to help us reach our goal. Our students are amazing, unique innovators and we should have necessary supplies to support their interests and passions! Thank you for taking the time to consider my project.
