My Students

Every morning, I am greeted by 24 energetic, excited, fun-loving children. These children come from all different walks of life and bring their own creative energy to our classroom. Our classroom is a very fun and nurturing atmosphere and together we are a team.

My students are a wonderful group of second graders from diverse backgrounds.

They are bright, funny, clever, curious, and show a world of potential, but need your support to be able to reach their full potential. I love working with 2nd graders because they are becoming much more aware of the world around them. They are beginning to want more independence, but are still looking for someone to guide them.

My Project

My students need to think of themselves as thinkers. Many of my students are musicians, artists and even avid readers, however they have difficulty when it comes to putting down their thoughts on paper.

One technique I am inspired to use with my students is to help them hear their own thinking voices.

I read about a workshop for the National Writing Project in which a first grade teacher used digital voice recorders with her students to show them, almost instantly, where they were doing "good thinking" during book discussions. I thought that this idea had tremendous potential for both reading and writing groups.

My idea is that with five voice recorders I can place one within each group of students as they discuss a common reading or a draft of a paper. Then, because of the ease and speed of digital technology, we can instantly listen to snippets of the conversation and identify where the group is doing higher level thinking or probing deeper into the writing process. I think that this kind of immediate accountability and feedback will teach students that they are all capable of doing "good thinking" and encourage them to do it more often.

In addition, my struggling writers can record their thoughts, then go back and listen to their thinking, and get their writing on paper. These digital voice recorders can also be used in any number of other projects.

Your support will help my students to envision themselves as thinkers and learners. Defining oneself as a student is an important step and can inspire more and deeper thinking and learning.
