Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They say music calms the savage beast, but in my class I have discovered storytelling calms and entrances all of my students. As soon as I open a book and begin reading aloud, all of my students seem to calm down, find a quiet spot, and just listen.

I teach in a small school on the North Shore of Oahu.

My students come from diverse cultures from around the world including Brazil, Japan and the Philipines. While most of my students are fluent in english many are second language learners and speak english only at school.

My Project

My students really enjoy listening to me read aloud. They hear rich vocabulary and expression in the story that they have not quite developed on their own yet. By having a listening center in my class it would allow my students to listen to a variety of stories, and read along to help them develop their own fluency and expression. It would also help them to gain new site words and make reading more independent. For my second language learners this is an essential component in helping them to become more fluent readers and speakers.

By donating to this project it would enable my students to have a learning center in which they can relax and listen to a variety of stories.

They can make choices on what they want to listen to and read stories as many times as they choose to help them become fluent and lifelong readers.
