My Project

My first grade class has 22 curious and bright young minds in a rural community in Oklahoma. They love using a variety of tools to practice the skills they are working in our classroom.

My students love to listen to stories!

They are engaged with the words and pictures as the plot unfolds before them. They look through easy readers, but often ask to listen to more challenging books that peak their varying interest. This love of literature is evident in their story sharing with one another and writing to connect to literature. Though they have access to online story platforms, they love to look at actual books, discovering the details within the illustrations and having the hands-on experience of turning pages and sharing the same story with a partner or small group.

This diverse group of first graders includes students from various cultural backgrounds and English language learners. Many of my first graders come from homes that are not rich in literature and they have lacked exposure to print before coming to school. Covid-19 further impacted this, limiting their opportunity to listen to a variety of genres and modeled fluency. By implementing a listening center in our classroom, my first graders will have the opportunity to listen to a variety of literature that model fluency and allow students to work on comprehension skills. After listening to the story, they will have an opportunity to reflect and connect what they have read with other learners, current learning objectives, and personal experiences.
