My Students

When you walk into my classroom you will see a group of enthusiastic 2nd graders, full of energy! I tell my students a secret on the very first day of school. I tell them that each and every one of them were intentionally chosen to be in my classroom because they are the best students in this school! From that moment on, they walk a little taller, and hold their heads a little higher, because they believe that they are!

I teach in an inner-city Title 1 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where 100 percent of our students are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.

Many students at my school receive a weekend food bag, something they eagerly look forward to. So many of our students are homeless so the food bag helps to sustain them over the weekend. We talk a lot about having a growth mindset in our classroom. All 17 of my students know that it's OK to make a mistake because that is how we learn. We don't give up when something is hard, and it's never I CAN'T IT'S ALWAYS I CAN!

My Project

This listening center will help my students become fluent readers. In my district, second-grade students are expected to read 87 words per minute by the end of the school year.

Sixty-one percent of my students are reading well below grade level.

It is so frustrating to be "the one" who can't read. In my classroom, there are eleven "the ones". Watching them struggle is so hard because what I want for all of my students more than anything else is to feel successful in my classroom. We practice a growth mindset: we can do difficult things, we don't give up when it's hard, we keep going to grow our brains.

For my students who struggle to read they truly feel that they cannot do difficult things, and they do give up when it's too hard. Utilizing the listening center will provide them with the confidence they so desperately need.
