This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Beginning readers need to experience language in many ways: they need to see words, write words, and hear words. We do this at school all day long, but kids need this at home as well.

87% of our students speak Spanish at home.

Our parents are very supportive of their children's efforts to do well in school and can read Spanish-language books to and with their children, but for many of our kids the only reading they'll hear at home will be through the audiobooks they can check out through our school library. Because almost all of our students (99%) live below the poverty level we can't expect that they'll have access to CD players at home.

My Project

We are asking for CD players so we can make them available for check-out through our school library. We've had CD players available before, but since they're checked out so often they break over time. The CD players we are asking for in this grant are to replace ones we've had to discard.

It's crucial that we provide our students with the tools they need to succeed in school.

By giving them CD players to take home so they can listen to audiobooks, we are doing just that.
