My Students

Occasionally my students have to listen to authentic material in the classroom and since they do not all work at the same pace, it would be truly great if they could each have their own headphone to listen at their own pace.

My students come from low-income homes, however, they are all willing to learn new things.

As long as the resources are made available, my students will definitely use all the tools to help them develop the skills necessary to learn a foreign language. My school is a small school and having such an intimate setting, teachers are well aware of each student's circumstances. Even though some students may be able to bring in a pair of headphones, not all of them can afford to. To avoid the awkwardness for those who do not have resources, I think this is the best way to resolve this issue.

My Project

Students often go to the computer lab to use the computers for different purposes. We use an online program to enhance student learning and to tailor assignments to suit the individual student. In order for them to benefit from this, they require headphones so as not to disturb each other during listening activities. Over-the ear headphones are easier to share as far as hygiene is concerned, as opposed to those that plug into the ear. They do not all listen to the same recordings, nor do they go at the same pace.

My students will definitely benefit from these donations.

When I was a foreign language student, I appreciated the opportunities to hear authentic target language, which under normal circumstances, as a student, there is no guarantee that one would listen to it outside of the classroom. Repetition is very useful when developing the skill of listening. Students can replay recordings as many times as necessary for them to respond to questions about what they heard.
