Help Ms. Martin

Our school is a Pre-k to 8 inclusion school. I am the Media Specialist serving 240 students in all grades. Approximately 80% of my students qualify for free lunch.

Our students have varying needs, but a majority of them need to improve their proficiency in reading and language arts. Some students read several grade levels below state standards. Our special education students are included in the general education classrooms and may need help reading books the rest of the class is reading. Many do not have books at home or caring family members to read to them.

It is for this reason that I am requesting portable mp3 and CD players. These devices will allow students to borrow books from classrooms or the media center and listen to audio versions of the book at the same time. This has been shown in many educational studies to greatly improve students' reading comprehension and fluency. Audio files are available from our public libraries and online. CD versions of books are available in the Media Center and from the classroom teachers.

There is no other funding for this type of material to aid our students. In addition to providing the students with an opportunity to read the same books as their peers who are able to read on grade level, you will be giving them the gift of the love of reading for pleasure and enjoyment, which will last a lifetime. Students will be able to enjoy many books that they would not have had a chance to experience while improving their reading and comprehension skills.
