My Students

What's better than reading a good book? What happens if you can't read that book? You listen to it! Our students need a listening center in order to hear the reading skills they are practicing in their every day lives.

I currently have 22 vibrant first graders who are very excited to learn.

They are a great group of students who have created a positive and loving classroom community. We are at a Title I school in an urban neighborhood, and 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Most of our school funding goes to curriculum resources and therefore that doesn't leave much for "luxuries" like a listening center for reading groups. We are also a turnaround school, so our students need to see how special they are and how worth it they are!

My Project

We are requesting a listening center. As we do our guided reading, students move from one center to the other, but we have never been able to have a listening center before because we lack the resources. By providing our class with this resource, EVERY student will be able to enjoy a good book, even the students who haven't yet acquired the reading skills necessary to read on their own. Listening to the stories being read provides the students with opportunities to practice their reading fluency and sight word skills, creating better readers!

This project is important because it will give every student the chance to experience books and reading!

Even the students who cannot read a story on their own can follow along to the audio book and pick up essential reading skills along the way. Your donation will provide these students with the resources they need to become successful readers!
