My Students

Children’s Village is a large childcare center, established in 1976 to provide care for the children of workers in the garment industry. Forty-one years later, we serve nearly 450 children from 13 months through 12 years old. We are high-quality, as demonstrated by our national accreditation, earned from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and our high rating in our state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System, known as Keystone Stars. Nearly 88% of our families are living in poverty, working in labor intensive industries, such as restaurants and retail; 76% of our children are English Language Learners, and nearly 25% of our children have special needs. Even though our center has changed over the years, our mission has remained the same—to provide distinguished, high quality education for the children and families in our community.

For most of my students, this is their first school experience.

We believe this listening center will invite them to be curious and develop a love for reading!

My Project

My students need a listening center! They have access to shelves full of books, but most of my students cannot read words and they love when teachers read to them one on one. With a room full of twenty students, reading to children one on one throughout the day can be diffucult! Helping our classroom with the funds for this technology would allow groups of students to listen to stories being read to them in our classroom library. Following along to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. These components are crucial to engaging students in the adventures of texts.

Since they will use the listening center independently, they are in control of their learning and that is a powerful lesson to get them ready for kindergarten.

This center will have a very important benefit for children learning English who will be able to hear it spoken as they read it.
