This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend first grade at a low-income charter school. They work hard and want to do well, but the school does not always have the resources to best help the students. First grade is an important year in a child's education. Learning is very hands-on and interactive. One of the important interactive tasks learned in first grade is reading.

My first graders are excited about learning to read!

We have been setting goals as a class to help them become "second grade readers." I want to be able to help them become the best readers they can and develop a life-long love of reading.

My Project

Reading is essential to success in all subjects. An important part of reading is listening and comprehending what was read. Even in first grade, students are expected to retell the story, ask and answer questions about the text and make personal connections. Developing good listening skills is key to a student's understanding of a story.

With the help of the listening center, students will be able to hear a story being read while being able to follow along in the text.

This helps students develop word association, as well as hear a good example of a story being read fluently. These skills are important to the development of good reading skills.
