In the Fall, I will be teaching twelve Kindergarten and 1st grade students with multiple disabilities, within a 12:1 setting. My school is a public school within a low-income, urban setting. Some of the disabilities include autism, speech impairments, learning disabilities, and ADHD. Not only do these students have disabilities, but they also lack the experience of listening to different books and stories. They are rarely read to outside of the classroom and do not have the opportunity to listen to books on tape/CD.

Due to the lack of stories read to them, these students do not enjoy listening to stories as much as do other children from different areas. They would rather watch TV or play video games. At home, their parents do not have the education or ability to sit down and read them a story. Unfortunately, I do not have time to read all day long and would love to be able to have a listening center. This will allow the students to listen to a story of their choice and build the love of listening and reading.

To help build the students' enjoyment of reading and books, I will need a listening center. This listening center comes with a CD/Cassette player, 6 headphones, and a jack. It will allow the students to sit in a group and listen to a story of their choice. This will help build their ability to make decisions, work in a group setting, and enjoy listening to stories. It will also help them with fluency, by listening to the way a book should be read, and their word recognition. The jack will also allow them to listen to the story at an appropriate volume. Right now I have a CD player that cannot have headphones plugged into it. When students try to listen to a story, they need to keep the volume down so they do not distract the rest of the class. I plan to use this listening center everyday during literacy centers and during free time

By having a listening center, students will be able to increase their enjoyment of reading and love for the written word. Not only am I looking to help improve their listening skills, but I also want to provide my students with an opportunity to build their enjoyment of reading.
