This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the most soothing sounds to a child is someone reading them a great story. My eager little learners love reading on their own or listening to a story read aloud. A listening center in our class would be a great way to differentiate literacy instruction on a daily basis.

My students are special people who have overcome enormous obstacles in their short lives.

I work in a day treatment facility for students who are emotionally disturbed. Most of them are victims of abuse or neglect and are in the foster care system. I teach in a very low income area of New York City where all of my students are living in poverty and qualify for free lunch. Resources are very few and far between. Despite all of this, my class has managed to stay focused and motivated. They are extremely bright, funny, and excited learners who love coming to school.

My Project

We have very few resources in the school. Differentiation takes a ton of creativity on the part of the teachers. We love to do Center Time in my room because it is a fun way to differentiate instruction. Some of my students are auditory learners who would benefit from a literacy listening center where they can listen and learn! I am requesting a portable CD player, Read Along Books, and a Sequencing Center for a differentiated listening center.

In any classroom you will find a multitude of learning styles, learning levels, interests, etc.

My classroom is no different and a listening center would make literacy instruction accessible to my students who struggle staying focused during literacy centers. These materials will help open up the world of reading to my auditory learners!
