My Students

Can you read this: MNIKN, HFAL FJLA FNA? Of course not, but reading is something most of us take for granted. Struggling readers, however, read below (or sometimes well below) grade level. Listening to books on CD can help struggling readers improve and be engaged in reading, instead of dreading it.

My students are 5th graders at a fantastic public school.

Over 75% of students at my school qualify for Free or Reduced lunch. Unfortunately for some of my students, they did not have a permanent teacher for all of last year (only one 4th grade teacher taught for the entire year, the others had to leave due to medical and family issues). This means that they are starting off 5th grade a little behind what is expected of them by both the state and by my school's demanding curriculum.

My Project

I'm a first year teacher, so all of this is new to me. So it was a surprise to discover how mountainous a project it is to stock a classroom with all of the supplies and materials my students deserve. Having exhausted my own resources to provide the basics, I am now hoping to get some help to give my struggling readers the extra help they need. These books on CD will not only help my struggling readers to improve their own reading, it will allow them to focus on understanding the story instead of getting frustrated just figuring out the words. Most importantly, listening to books on CD can help these students to see reading and books differently, improve their confidence, and hopefully get them to actually enjoy reading. In addition, struggling readers sometimes face harsh treatment from their peers (especially by 5th grade)and these listening supplies can give them an activity to be excited about and even envied by their classmates. I want all of my students to be confident readers!

As a new teacher, it's overwhelming to provide everything your students need.

I want to give my students the best, and some of them need a little extra help to achieve the high standards I am setting for them. I want all of my students to be confident and competent readers because reading is the foundation for all learning (even math). These listening supplies can make a huge impact on my students at an age when they are establishing themselves as people and learners.
