My Students

When you were growing up, did you ever ask a lot of who, what, how, and why questions? Such as, why do caterpillars grow into butterflies? Why are polar bears white? How do turkeys gobble? My students ask these types of questions and many more.

I teach in a high poverty area where 95% of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and many are not in print-rich environments and are not read to regularly at home. Education sometimes takes a back-seat to other things in their lives. My students are not yet able to understand the importance of education, especially reading. With my students just entering Kindergarten, they are filled with questions about everything, wanting to know the hows, whats, and whys to it all. They are a wonderful group of students who are eager to learn and soak up all the knowledge they can.

My Project

They are so eager to learn and are filled with questions. I have lots of answers for them, but I want them to learn the skills they need to answer some of these questions on their own. With Weekly Readers, students are embraced with Non-Fiction text that will reinforce reading skills (we can find letters, punctuation, words, etc) and provide knowledge on various themes/topics that pertain to their age level and interest (pumpkins, penguins, Thanksgiving, etc). The Weekly Readers provide wonderful photographs and short, simple facts that would allow for all of my students to be actively engaged--from the low-level learners to the high-level learners. And with each child having their own copy, they will be able to go home and "teach" the theme/topic to their parents which will build self-esteem and provide more interaction between parent and child.

Your donations will help my students know and understand the importance of reading as well as for them to understand that people in our world/community value education and want them to succeed and become future leaders.
