This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us create a special effects crew in the Wicked Witch's haunted forest and the Wizard of Oz to make fire on stage!

Our middle school drama/speech department serves kids grades 6 - 8.

Our Title I school district is in a high-risk community where most students are minority and low-income. Though our students struggle at times to succeed, they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment. We have an after-school drama club program where students can participate in 2 full-length plays, improv, speech team and Thespian society. Students of all ability levels and learning types play a role in the creative process. This past year, over 90 students participated in our program. We try to find a place in our theatre for any child interested in the performing arts. Our students act, sing and dance on the stage. They learn technical skills backstage as well. Students are responsible for just about every aspect of the creative process; sound, set, props, costumes, makeup, and lights are all designed and executed by the theater students.

My Project

This year, we dare to tackle a much-loved musical, "The Wizard of Oz." This play offers many opportunities for our students. It has a huge cast, flexible casting, and limitless chances to be creative. Unfortunately, our budget is very limited. We have some materials we can adapt for our play, but we are very short on special effects equipment. We need a fog machine (with fog juice) to create the creepy effects in the Witch's haunted forest and castle. We also need LED fire to use in the Wizard's chamber and in the scene when Dorothy and Toto visit the caravan. We have never had a special effects crew before so getting this equipment would allow us to create a completely new crew (and include more kids).

This new crew would learn about how to create dazzling looking film and stage effects in a safe way.

Your donation would make it possible for us to create magnificent effects for "the Wizard of Oz" and form a new crew at the same time.
