Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the Northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line.

My students have no books at home and a lack of access to the public library. Therefore, the literacy exposure at school has become very important. First graders in my class are having difficulty in solving math word problems. One of the very experienced professionals whispered the secrets to me, the students need to read math related books to get used to articulate math in language. I looked through my book bins and I only have a few torn-up counting books. How I long for a tub of children’s literature linked to math! So my students could make connections between math and reading and writing.

I am asking for a selection of level appropriate math books. Ideally I could read aloud one book a day to start my math block.

Start young, start early, give them a chance and let them shine. How exciting to watch our 6-year-olds grow into mathematicians!
