Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a proud 6th grade Language Arts and Reading teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn, IL. As a person and teacher, reading has become a passion in my life and I always convey my strong feelings toward the wonderful world of reading to my students. As a reading teacher I don't want my students to read because they have to, but because they want to, and that is why I am searching for someone to fund my reading project to build a classroom library that will capture the interest of all of my students. My library will be built in a large open closet in the back of my room that will be filled with book shelves, posters, student art work and bean bags where students can relax and enjoy their novels. In the past, I have observed that many students read because it becomes a requirement and that they have become so adamant about getting perfect grades that they forget to read a book for their own personal pleasure or education growth. Through my classroom library I want my students to read at their leisure without expecting to write a book report or get tested on the reading material. I want my students to feel free to check a book out, read it at their own pace and then return it with hopes that they will discuss their opinions of the novel with me. I am a firm believer that reading equals power and I have reflected on my teaching and have noted that my students look up to me and come to understand and agree with some of my beliefs. Because I am Hispanic like a lot of them, grew up in the same lower class neighborhood, went to the same high school that they will most likely attend, I am a great example of what they can become. Because I believe reading equals power my students will believe it too.
