Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 9th grade, World History teacher in the Philadelphia School District. I teach in the second largest high school in the city. Our students come from a wide variety of Philadelphia neighborhoods and a plethora of backgrounds. We have students from over 50 different countries and speak over 14 languages. Often my students triumph over difficult situations at home, in their neighborhoods and with their families.

The students of Philadelphia are truly unique and special.

Our students participate in a wide variety of activities and job training. They earn internships, jobs and scholarships based on their excellent skill and drive. Our students work extremely hard on everything they have, even when all the odds are working against them. We have students that have seen gun violence, drug abuse, and a host of other issues that most adults would find insurmountable. Somehow though our students persevere, succeed and exceed our wildest hopes and expectations.

My Project

The goal of my project is to create a small store for my students who are in need of personal and school related products who do not have the means to get them from home. My students often find themselves in situations that are difficult to handle at home. Their parents, guardians, foster families and, some times no families at all, can't afford the basic necessities that our students need.

Students come to school day in and day out despite being uncomfortable.

Students come to school without soup, deodorant and toothpaste in their bathrooms. Girls come with no hair ties, hair brushes or chapstick. Students walk to school in the rain and the cold without a jacket. Students walk around with books falling out of their broken, taped up, stabled together book bags because no one can afford to get them a new one. Families do the best they can under the circumstances they are given. Many of our families are faced with unemployment, relocation (sometimes from a different country), and a host of other issues that our students' personal hygiene and school supply needs fall to the wayside. I want to create a safe space for students to be able to come, pick up some personal items and take them home to use them. Students will receive coupons from teachers and staff members who see a student in need. This way we can help as many students as possible and they can do it without other students knowing. It will also aid in creating a safe, nurturing learning environment.

This project will help jump start the Locker of Love by providing a space to store and lock-up all of the products. Also, to help students have a good start with a backpack and hand sanitizer.
