Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
In my classroom we work not just to learn the material, but to experience and experiment with it as well through collaborative groups, to build key skills needed to succeed beyond high school.
We are a title 1 school located in southern California.
About 80% of our students are from low income families with a majority of Hispanic decent.
In my classroom I work with a wide variety of students. Many of the students in my classes are low achieving, English language learners, and special needs. While many of them aim for college, they need lots of help building the skills to get there or succeed in working right after high school. Our school has two CTE programs, as well as an AVID program to help students succeed.
My Project
Our school focuses on the AVID WICOR strategies (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) as well as embraces what Common Core is about. My students need tripods, iPad and smart phone mounts. I plan on using this video equipment in conjunction with the iPads my school has available to have students create videos on explaining and demonstrating how well they understand the material. Through video creation, students are engaged and incoperating the highest levels of thinking and also need to work together with others, plan and organize their video recording and editing, and share what they've done with others. Activities that I plan on having students do with the equipment include current event reports through storytelling, documentary film making (for AVID and Biology), video lab reports, and video portfolios for work and applying to colleges.
I've noticed that when students make a product like a video or website to present to others (and not just me, the teacher), a different kind of energy is placed into the product.
They put more effort into it and follow a clear vision that they have set.
Giving students the opportunity to make quality footage with various equipment will help them learn how to use technology and tools to make a great product. It will teach them skills and creativity that they can apply beyond school.
