My Students

I teach in a large, public, inner-city school. My students are wonderful third graders who struggle with learning due to a learning, language, attentional or emotional need. Learning a typical curriculum-differentiated to minimize the effects of their disabilities-the students are becoming problem solvers, reflective communicators, and active citizens of the school, community, and world.

Furthering my students' ability to think deeply and explain their thinking clearly and confidently is a huge priority in my classroom.

This can be an added challenge for students that are English Language Learners or students with speech-language issues. I am looking for ways to increase student discussion and engagement around their work. I also want to be able to show student work and provide immediate feedback.

My Project

I am requesting a document camera for my classroom. I have borrowed one and found it to be a powerful piece of technology. The students have been very motivated to see their work on the Smartboard. It has given me an instant way to model procedures using manipulatives, show stellar work, and blow up text and work so that it is visible to everyone.

Showing student work on the document camera really engages them and promotes discussion and reflection around their work.

Knowing that they get to show their work and will need to speak about it helps them to take more ownership of their work. Using the document camera to show their work allows me to guide them as a group to further their thinking and explanation of their work.
