My Students

You've all heard "A picture is worth a thousand words," by Napoleon Bonaparte. You have also heard, "Lights, Camera, Actions!" But, can you imagine a group of third through fifth graders saying "Let's show the world!" That is what I want my incredible students to say.

I am team teaching 160 third through fifth grade students.

All of these students have been identified as gifted in an inner-city school district in Alabama. Many of my students come from poverty and have no way to tell their own story. My base school hosts six different schools for gifted services from a variety of neighborhoods across our urban city. They are so excited to learn and have so many stories to tell. Alabama has been hit by so many catastrophes in the past few years - hurricanes, oil spills, and many, many tornadoes. Along with the rest of the country, many of their parents have lost their jobs and money is very, very tight. Funding has been cut and, in Alabama, programs for gifted children are minimally funded. My students deserve the best. They are excited to learn and to make a difference in their future and the future of others. Their creativity and inventiveness do not need to be stifled due to lack of resources.

My Project

Imagine students interviewing and taking pictures of civil rights leaders of the past. Imagine students taking pictures of their latest science project. Imagine students taking pictures of nature, architecture, sporting events, plays, student competitions, graduation, and their community. Imagine students being able to use their creativity to tell their digital story and express themselves. I would like for my students to be able to use photography as a tool that allows them to show what is important in their lives. Through photography, they are able to preserve our past and tell new stories. Photography will also allow them to express themselves through an art form.

My digital photography unit will allow my students to investigate their environment, explore nature, and see things through different eyes - the camera's eyes.

Your donation to our project will allow my students to tell their digital story and open new doors to creative expression, new perspectives, artistic achievement, and fun.
