Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the kindest, hardest working, and most persistent people I know in the face of adversity. That persistence was put to the test this spring. New York was an epicenter of the disease, and most of my students live in the zip codes in Queens that had the highest infection rates and mortality: Corona, Jackson Heights, and Jamaica. Many lost family and suffered through this virus themselves. Through the difficulty, they continued to learn with me online although our school was shuttered.

Piling on to the uncertain times we've just lived through, the upcoming school year may be fully online, or partially in-person: no one knows what is coming next.

I am optimistic students and I can return to some normalcy in September, but I know that I need to step up my ability to teach remotely. The reality is that at most there will be in-person school only a few days a week. Some will be learning from home full-time. Add to this that cases are spiking across the US, and we could all return to full remote learning at a moment's notice.

My Project

No matter where we are in September, students need to learn. I plan for students to explore health and the transmission of disease in their communities, an issue they clearly are invested in exploring. While many of them have devices like a cellphone to record interviews or explorations of their neighborhoods, the demands I have to produce lessons that aid them in this are a bit higher.

As students investigate what community means and the role science plays during this time of COVID, I need to record lessons and demonstrations that are visually and audibly clear.

Last semester, I was using my decade-old computer's internal camera, and the result was not at all polished. It was low-resolution, not particularly good for going away from a desk, and the audio was muffled. My English Language Learners (ELL's) need something clearer upon which to model their acquisition of language and quality of work.

I will use this camera to make quality demonstrations and lessons about our health: exercise, taking pulse, respiration, cellular respiration, and bacterial growth. Our school budgets are shrinking and there is no space for me to get equipment that will allow me to do this.

Our budgets have been cut and we are not being given the tools we need to teach in this new landscape. We need your support more than ever. Thank you all for your continued support of public education in the time of COVID.
