Film making in the classroom is a way for students to creatively express themselves in a fun, exciting, nonthreatening and educational modality. Movie making blends academics and hi-tech skills.
The students at my school come from a very wide range of backgrounds.
Some have lots of money and experiences with technology, while others may have never used a computer unless at school. Our elementary school has around 600 Kindergarten through sixth graders. With all that is asked of classroom teachers these days, they rarely have enough time to actually teach fun technology skills such as podcasting, photography and movie making.
My Project
This project requests a digital camera and lighting for our school, allowing students to use them to create movies as an artistic medium to tell their narrative stories. Paper and pencil have been the tools of writing classes for many years. Bringing movie making into classrooms will provide a storytelling tool to transform their writing into artistic movies.
Children are creative storytellers.
Some are unable to express themselves in the traditional way of writing them down on paper. How wonderful to give them the opportunity to be film makers. With your help, I hope to bring this versatile and creative experience to our students. Maybe we'll spark the imagination of the next Steven Spielberg or Kathryn Bigelow.
