My Students

"I believe that every person is born with talent," says Maya Angelou, and so do I. My students often times struggle to find their creative sides but with a little encouragement, the sky's the limit!

Currently, my class consists of 11 second grade and 7 third grade students in a gifted program.

The ethnic distribution of the class is as follows: 16.6% Hispanic; 77.8% Afro Caribbean/African American; and 5.5% White. They attend school in an urban city and of the 18 students, 16 receive free or reduced lunch. Despite this class being in the advanced academics program, it is still a mixed ability classroom. Students have limited access to resources such as technology and often times lack the background knowledge of age or grade level information as their peers in other gifted programs.

My Project

“Lights, Camera, Action” is a multi-faceted student project involving reading, writing, costumes, creativity, and filmmaking. The main goal for this project is to provide students an engaging and entertaining activity that will enhance their writing skills and deepen their understanding of plot, setting and theme. Students will transform text covered in class during the year into a student-produced and acted 5-7 minute film. Text include such works as Thomas Rockwell’s “How to Eat Fried Worms” as well as Roald Dahl's "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Through use of a document camera, I will scaffold writing lessons. The process consists of script and dialogue creation, adaptable screenplays highlighting key scenes within the work, full costume and setting recreation, and a 2-3 paragraph write-up summarizing thematic elements and characterizations. The final films will be converted into a movie style DVD to be shown during a school film festival.

This project fits perfectly with my classroom's Hollywood theme.

This project would be an excellent culminating activity that also enhances my students' ability to identify themes or topics across a variety of fiction or nonfiction; use new vocabulary that is introduced and taught directly; and identify and explain the elements of story structure, including character development, setting, plot, and problem/resolution in a variety of fiction.
