My Students

Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the self contained setting. We focus on all core areas of academics within our class with an emphasis on functionality. Our students are full of energy and creativity.

We celebrate our students' abilities and uniqueness.

As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school. Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.

My Project

My goal and vision for my class is to prepare each student to be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives. We focus on daily living, social, community, and employability skills throughout the day. Students are exposed to mock and real life situations in these areas. Involving the students in school functions and activities plays a large role in this vision.

A new project that will incorporate the school community and my students is Lightning Bean Coffee Company.

Teachers will order drinks in the morning using a google form, and then students will make the drinks using a Keurig machine and deliver the coffee to specified locations. A proposed run through would look like:

•Google forms will be printed and students will use this as a ticketed order. Orders include who ordered, pick-up location, time, type of drink, and types of sweeteners/creamers.

•Coffee will be made using a Keurig. Coffee will be stored in colored bins and sweeteners/creamers will be labeled by color to differentiate for lower level students.

•When a drink is prepared, it will be transferred to a cart for delivery.

•Teachers will be billed upon delivery.

This coffee business model will reinforce and practice real life employability skills that students will need once they begin working a job of their own. Such skills include: following directions, fulfilling orders, making change, delivering to specified locations, social interactions, cleaning work area, assuming responsibility of job title, and so much more. Please help us get started on this inclusive project!
