My student's abilities range from slightly delayed to severely delayed. This year, I am adding 10 typically developing children to my class for a total of 18 students! I also service students with an Autism diagnosis. My school is a Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school and is very diverse. Some students receive special education services including occupational, physical and speech therapy as well as Title I pull-out services for extra help with reading and math. We also have a dental clinic within the school where the children can get their teeth cleaned and be seen by a dentist.
The school offers an after school program where the students receive help with their homework, can participate in activities (like going to the symphony) and sit down for dinner with their friends.
At the after school program, children can also attend counseling groups as well. Counseling is also offered throughout the school day with our school counselor and our community counseling partners. All students also qualify for free meals.
My Project
My students need a light table and accessory kits to add to our discovery center and to also use during our large and small group STEAM lessons. The children can experiment with variations of light with and without the materials.
The children can use the additional materials to build fine motor skills, social, vocabulary, language, math and science skills.
The table will provide excitement and encourage children to explore the discovery center - which is normally not as popular as the others. The amount of open ended question opportunities this table can provide will boost cognitive and language skills.
